Did any of these people vote in the elections?
Shampoo is a great movie for people who want some "seventies experience". But I expected this movie to be more political, because the first thing you read on the imdb plot summary is presidential elections. Instead, the movie was almost anti-political. Yes, the events took place during the election day and the election topics are constantly on the background. But to my surprise, none of the main characters are involved in politics, none even mentions elections during the movie and, surely, none of them seemed to cast a vote in the elections. That was probably meant to illustrate how little these people cared about societal issues, as they were only concerned about their personal issues. Such symbolism would have been stronger if the movie had chosen some more shocking social event as a background. For instance, the assassination of JFK (news of the assassination coming from radio and TV, but the characters of the movie go on with their lives, barely noticing).
