Pretty dark if you think about it (SPOILERS)

A couple is on a road trip, likely on their way to the honeymoon, when their car breaks down and they find a spooky house and ask for help. Lots of things happen there, like Frankenstein story being real, Frank making the couple cheat on each other and most of them end up dying and yeah..

It's like Disney movies; dark stories lightened up with musical and humor :p

There are many layers to the Frankenstein thing too I feel.

Rocky, his creation, is nothing physically like the creature in Frankenstein apart from being frightened. Rocky is the perfect man physically yet chronologically a baby. That itself raises an extremely rightly taboo subject as Frank n Furter takes him as his bride.

O'Brien said there's a lot of Adam and Eve in the film and, whilst Brad and Janet fulfil that, so does Rocky as he is an immaculate conception. Or he could be a Jesus metaphor.

Agree with both of you. The ending is particularly dark and harrowing, I think.

Brad and Janet - see Shock Treatment (the sort of sequel) and therefore so does Dr Scott.
So it's only 4 out the 10 speaking parts that die. Ok that's quite a few but not most.

It was TERRIBLY dark. MANY MAJOR SPOILERS. The more you think about it the darker it gets. Here is just a brief rundown which won't touch on everything but on the main things that stuck with me.

--It starts out not that bad, with sort of a promise of being funny, but never actually is, which is annoying but not really disturbing.

--At first the scene at Frank-N-Furter's home is no worse than just a really weird party in a home that either has no phone or they won't let Brad and Janet use it if there is. Troubling and a bit annoying. Things get weirder when Brad and Janet are stripped of their clothing.

--Everything goes down at a frightening pace once Eddie appears. Where does he even come from? He seems to burst from a deep freeze like some reanimated zombie, and what about the deep gash on his forehead that he doesn't even seem to notice? Was he dead already or in suspended animation?

--Things go alarmingly bad when Frank-N-Furter murders Eddie and says he had it coming.

--After this point it is apparent that something is terribly wrong with Brad and Janet. Why were they not out of there the moment after the murder occurred? What kind of people accept an invitation to stay overnight in the home of someone who just committed a brutal murder no matter how scantily they are dressed or how bad the weather is? Suppose he wanted to eliminate witnesses and was just waiting for them to fall asleep to whack them?

--The fact that Brad and Janet both allow themselves to be seduced by Frank-N-Furter and Janet later by Rocky Horror shows that not only are they not as committed to each other as an engaged couple should be, but that they aren't concerned about pregnancy or STDs. They clearly had no protection.

--The dinner scene where Eddie's body is revealed is awful. Not only was Eddie murdered but horribly mutilated. His uncle doesn't seem terribly upset about this, having called Eddie a bad kid all along, and later says it may have been for the best though he was threatened at the time.

--Near the end the Igor character kills Frank-N-Furter, Rocky Horror, and the girl who admitted she had loved Frank-N-Furter. Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott barely escape with their lives.

--At the end Brad, Janet, and Dr. Scott escape the house but are all seen collapsed outside. Did they all die or were they just sort of stunned?

--How is any of this entertaining or funny? Unnecessarily brutal and harsh!

According to the director, Janet was pregnant at the end of the movie with Frank’s baby. It’s written in the police report in the beginning of the movie.

reply

I missed any police report at the beginning but I understand there was supposed to be a sequel with that situation which was never made.

reply

The police report was at the beginning of the movie when the Criminologist reading a book to the audience, and he was talking about Brad, and Janet. There’s a police report next to Janet’s picture where she’s talking about food cravings, and the report said that she’s pregnant.
