Was Tim Curry's Frank-N-Furter inspired by Z-Man?

I can't help feeling reminded of RHPS when I watch Russ Meyer's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970). Does anyone else who's seen both movies also suspect that Tim Curry's work here may have been inspired by John Lazar's fey, sexy, charming Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell in the earlier film? Has the director or actor ever commented on this?

The original cast went to see BTVOTD; Richard saying that all the Rocky characters were inspired by ones in that movie.

I can well believe that. The golden boy in both films spurns the androgynous central character; there's a wild-looking long-haired fellow at the party that reminds me of Rif-Raff; there are wide-eyed innocents getting seduced by glamorous decadence; both are very campy musicals, etc. I didn't know that there was independent confirmation of my hunch though. Did you read or watch a particular interview that mentioned it, that you can link?

reply

I don't quite remember, but it must have been mentioned in either From Concept To Cult or Rayner Bourton's memoir.

Also if you look closely in Columbia and Magenta's room you can clearly see the soundtrack album for "Beyond the valley of the dolls"......

I heard Frank was inspired in part by Mick Jagger. I have no idea if that is true. But Tim Curry does a great impression of Mick. Please click on

for Curry as Mick on "Saturday Night Live".

What great insight! I never noticed that before and Beyond The Valley of the Dolls is one of my favorites films. Rocky Horror Picture Show is another one of my other favorites.
