This is an outstanding article with info about the film and interviews Jack Nicholson (who it turns out owns the film rights!)
However, the Chicago Tribune link is an abridged version. The complete article (with a couple photos, too) is at the Los Angeles Times website at:

I saw the film two weeks ago at the London Film Festival (no fewer than six people including the writer and one of the actresses wre there to introduce it; great feeling of expectation) and it's a cracker. Apparently Antonioni was under contract at the time to deliver a film of "no more than 120 minutes" and his final submitted film was just over 126. So some killjoy at MGM actually took the scissors to it. This has all now been re-instated.
It's a wonderful film in the best European Existentialist tradition, and Nicholson's on peak form. So odd to see Maria Scheider in another film as she's only popularly know for "Last Tango in Paris". She's relaxed, sexy and comfortable in this film and it's a shame she didn't do more. Cannot now wait to see it on DVD, with lots of extras telling the strage story of this haunting film.
this is great!
been wanting to see this movie since i first heard of it three years ago..if the dvd comes out in america does that mean i cant watch on my european dvd player? if not, can i pop the disc in to my computer and watch it then? if not, then its not that great...
According to amazon.com the DVD releases on May 23, 2006. Let's hope so!

Damn, no Criterion release. That blows.
what kind of extra features will be on the the new one?
shareI know for sure that Nicholson is doing the commentary. The only commentary he's ever done is for Something's Gotta Give, so this should be good.'
"Denny Crane."
Not true. He is on the As Good As It Gets commentary as well.
Let's hope he does give a commentary. Also - I placed an order at a dvdwebsite Digitaeyes.net and they say the release date is March 14th.

I'm actually happy to hear that Criterion is not releasing it. They don't nessessarily have better extras than studio releases. Plus, they automatically add an extra $10 to the retail price.
shareReally? Criterion seems to do excellent jobs on their titles--perhaps the extra ten dollars is worth it. Sony isn't doing any real wonders with their release, but the video transfer seems to be very good.

I have yet to see this, but I have ordered it. I really am looking forward to it. I have no expectations, so hopefully I will be surprised.

I plan on seeing The Passenger in the next few weeks. Jack Nicholson does commentary on the DVD, so I'm looking forward to hearing his thoughts.
