Did I Miss Something?

I consider myself an afficianado of film and not at all interested in Hollywood blockbusters. But I think I missed something in Passenger. Can someone explain to me what's so great about the film. In my humble opinion it was painfully slow with a very undeveloped plot/story line. I do admit the long shot in the final scene was interesting. But other than that I was not intrigued. What in your opinion are the high points of the film?

I saw this in Paris with a bunch of film snobs, and after the movie I had a similar reaction to yours. My friend was steaming because we had missed the French beating the Spaniards in the world cup, so on our way back to his house, I tried to redeem the film because I didn't want him in a bad mood. I found that by talking through it I was able to find ample ground to build appreciation on. What started as a hollow defense turned into an earnest one, and we both came to agree that the film was worth the opportunity cost. The reasons: the parallels or recurring themes, the existential quandary that the other surly responder talked of, and the intricate, subtle glimspses into Locke's character. I suggest watching it again, and then while its fresh, try to defend it to yourself. You will find that the details save it.

I can understand why you think that, and it's the type of film that you think you're going to be in danger of being horribly bored with, but for me, I wasn't bored, in fact I was somewhat mesmerised, I thought it was a master-stroke. There is just something, I don't know what it is, awfully ambiguous about this film, an unidentified quality where the film just elludes your grasp, I just found it rather seductive but failing to give in to you as a viewer. And for me, that's what makes it great, that there is this hidden alluring quality about it which you just can't put your finger on. In a way, a bit similar to Kubrick's 2001, where there is this grand presence behind the film, an unseen power looming behind it.

It's clearly not Antonioni's best work. The problem is not the acting (Nicholson did a great job), it's the story by Mark Peploe that is confusing.
