Still images that aren't in the released film


The Sony classics site which mentions the re-release of this film has included some still images.

I know there are various versions of the film in circulation but the version I saw does not include the following:

I've seen the still images before where Nicholson is pouring the drink into Schneider's mouth but it wasn't in the film at all. And in any case, what IS he doing???

The shots of Schneider in a yellow dressing gown (stills 1, 3, 7, 9 and 10) relate to a part of a story where the two have travelled to a hotel. Although still 9 looks like it may have been taken during a break in filming.

In the version I saw, Schneider discovers Nicholson's gun and he takes it off her. She looks through his diary and comments on the names of the people in them and jokes that 'Daisy' seems to be his favourite. Then there is just an understated and very brief scene which implies that they slept together.

I have no idea at all about still 6. I can't link it with any part of the film. I don't remember any of the other characters, it is probably from Locke's spell in Barcelona.

Still 11 is when Locke (Nicholson) returns to his house in Notting Hill, London. In the version I saw Locke goes up the steps leading to the front door and then walks away from the house. He doesn't go inside. The intervening spell must have been cut out.

Incidentally about 6 years ago, I had the audacity to walk up the steps leading to the front door of that house and rang the bell in order to ask the owner whether they knew that a Jack Nicholson film had been shot there. Unfortunately a maid answered the door who could barely speak English so I didn't get very far!!

The moustache scene isn't in any released version apparently.

I think picture 1 was taken during a break in filming and isn't in the actual film.

Have you seen a version where Locke enters his house in London?

In the version I've got he goes to the front door and walks away.

Also I think the scene where he meets the old man in the Umbraculo has been cut.

When the old man says to Locke when referring to the children

'They can't get away from us, its boring'

there follows a noise as though he was about to say something but its cut off and the scene jumps to Locke asking him

'Where did you learn to speak English?'

In your version is there any dialogue between those two lines?

I also found it strange that after he walks away from his house in London it jumps to him in an airport in Germany. When I first saw it, it took me a few minutes to figure out where he was.

I wonder if something was cut from there as well.

The sudden jumps in location from Africa to London and particularly from London to Munich makes me wonder if something was cut out.

The rerelease of the film by Sony on Oct 29 I believe will have many if not all of these scenes restored. It will be "Antonioni's preferred cut", and will clock in at 126 min, instead of the 119 min. that the IMDb lists as the original theatrical release runtime. YAY!

there are perhaps extra scenes that will still be left out, the european released original is what is now being re-released, as Ant. wanted. the yahoo group on anotnioni has more info..look for robert koehlers interesting posts about it all.

i still enjoy a lot the film but ..

Antonioni in Il Messaggero 31. August 1983:
"There has not been a film of mine that has completely satisfied me. Well, The Passenger would have completely satisfied me if I had been able to include all of the parts I was forced to cut out because of its length. And lets not talk of the final version for the English-speaking market which I can not accept, and would have removed my name from, if I could have. But the even the European edition- which is the one I signed, and which I consider the acceptable version of the film- even that version, I believe, is mutilated because the story is not well explained. For example, a sequence is omitted that explains the relationship between the protagonist and his wife, thus making it possible to understand how the failure of their marriage has an impact. If I could have included that sequence, the narrative would have been much better Another example might be the brothers who produced The Eclipse and cut the films ending without letting me know. The ending might have seemed a little long, but it actually worked because it left the viewer certain feelings, a lingering sense of the whole story that has just been told."
