Does anyone have any idea where the African sections of the film were shot?

In Algeria, in the Hoggar Mountains. That pink sand and those black rocks are just gorgeous.

(Both Nicholson and Mark Peploe name the village in their DVD commentaries, but I can't remember for the life of me what it is.)

Thanks. I thought it was Chad or Mali myself...

It is supposed to be Chad, but for reasons I can't recall, the crew had to move north. I can tell you those opening scenes were actually the last ones shot.

It was shot in Djanet.
