Faye Dunaway originally signed to co-star?

I found an article from 9/1/73 that indicates that Faye Dunaway was originally supposed to play the Maria Schneider role and Schneider the Jenny Runacre role. I had never heard about this before - interesting.

Jack Nicholson's new picture, "Fatal Exit," off to an unbelievable start in Spain. First, it is announced by director Michelangelo Antonioni that Maria
Schneider, previously set in the picture, has suffered a nervous
breakdown and cannot do her role. Susan George is flagged down in Hollywood
to replace her. But when Susan arrives in Barcelona, who is on the set and
working but Maria! What's more, Maria is performing, not in the second lead,
but in the part previously assigned to Faye Dunaway, supposedly the co-star, Faye is asked to take the "other" role. After saying she will "think
about it," Ms. Dunaway takes off—not to return! And there's nothing for disappointed Susan George to do but pack up her things and return to
Hollywood (and boyfriend Jack Jones), a very disillusioned young lady."
