Over-rated pretentious piece of boring crap

Long, boring, slow, pretentious, with terrible stiff performances by Nicholson and Shneider. The way they deliver their lines is laughably bad, like a rehearsal.

This is a bad boring movie whether you like arthouse films or not. See Fellini or Pasolini instead, Antonioni is highly overrated.

I am about to watch this movie based on reviews I have read. I would comment in exactly the same way as you have here on a uncut version of Last Tango in Paris which was not only very boring but painful to watch, I have see far better unpretentious hard core pornographic movies where the actors were much better looking and entertaining. The only other Antonini film I have seen was Red Desert, equally excruciating. However, I shall give this one a shot as I like Jack Nicolson.

Wow, a thread that finds both Antonioni and Bertlolucci boring/pretentious- a new low for IMDB.

reply

Indeed! I don't even think people know what pretentious really means. It surely isn't a word that can be used to describe the works of Antonioni and Bertolucci - two of the greatest directors of all time.
Pretentious isn't the same as boring or meaningless. A movie that doesn't force a perception of a thing on you or give it more importance than it has can't be pretentious. Antonioni and Bertolucci show things as they are, sure they have a perspective on their subjects, but they allow the viewer to interpretate for themselves.
An example of a pretentious director I can think of would be Christopher Nolan. He's characters constantly explain the audience what to get out of the movies.

that'll be the day

Long and slow, for sure, but I loved the movie's serenity and Nicholson's performance as a man in search of an identiy and a meaning for himself. Beautiful and melancholy, I've seen it twice, and loved every it time.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

3 instances of "boring", 2 instances of "pretentious", 1 instance of "over-rated" and another one of "overrated". Not bad for an essentially 3 line OP.

Slow, yes but not boring. Complex maybe and I'm not Schneider's biggest fan. Jack was excellent and you know what you are going to get from the director. Love the shot where he follows the cars from left to right and back again a few times, when the couple are sitting outside the cafe.......genius!!!

So, if this is an 'observational' film, the characters are woefully undeveloped.
The plot is really just an outline that frames the photography.
For me, it was interesting to see Notting Hill Gate from 40 years ago, and the under-developed Spanish countryside was lovely, but this isn't a film to invite friends around to watch on a Saturday night!
Funnily enough, if you watch it with no sound, it could be one of those travel shows!

You guys here generally have very positive comments on the movie. That's better than having negative comments, at least, for yourselves. However, to me, the movie is boring, waste of time and resources. I agree with the starter of this topic that the movie is definitely over-,over-,rated.

At times like this I always wonder who chained the poster to a chair, pried and forced their eyes open and made them watch a movie they then hop on the boards to claim they despise?
