Anyone else wonder why...

...they went on a picnic to Hanging Rock? It doesn't seem a suitable site for a bunch of school girls. It was mentioned more than once that it was a dangerous place:

"Once again let me remind you the rock itself is extremely dangerous, you are therefore forbidden of any tomboy foolishness in the matter of exploration, even on the lowest slopes."

So why even take them there?

I know how you feel, Mister. I hate it when my igneous rocks are even touched!

I guess that the picnic area itself was considered safe, even if the Rock itself was dangerous. It apparently had a nice view (at a higher altitude than most of the landscape, save Hanging Rock itself).

It IS a magical and mysterious place...

Even today...

The picnic area was indeed safe. The girls should not have been allowed to go off exploring on the higher rocks on their own. Mam'selle made a serious error there.

I agree with icequeen_vienna. It seemed like it was actually just a popular picnic area that was actually a fair distance from the rock itself.
