Nurse Ratched plotted to have McMurphy KILLED after the boat incident

The Men in the room were discussing to move him to another facility and she said, "No lets keep him here"....Hmmmm I wonder why ? she knew she could set him up to have him lobotomized sooner than later, my theory, just sayin'

I believe that the boat incident may have been the last straw. She was a control freak and she saw that Murphy was slowly undermining her position of control.

Regarding your comment about Trump, I don't like Clinton or Trump but he his what we need to get us out of this mess.

I equate Trump to getting a injection in the butt. I hated it when I was younger and still hate getting a shot of medicine in the butt but sometimes you need a shot in the butt to get better and at this moment Trump is the only one that has the medicine to fix this mess.

The first time McMurphy was sent for electro shock treatment that was definitely set up by Nurse Ratched, she knew how to set the patients off and she knew she would get a reason to give McMurphy shock treatment. As for having him lobotomized I don't think she planned that, McMurphy almost killed her and I don't think she was really willing to let it go that far. Make no mistake, she did intentionally crush Billy's spirit which was cold-hearted and evil, she did that to get back at McMurphy because she couldn't stand it that McMurphy helped him, but I don't think she was baiting him into choking her because she very easily could have been killed. She also knew that what she said to Billy could make him kill himself and to her getting back at McMurphy was all that mattered and if Billy killed himself as a result then that was fine with her.

With threatening to tell his mother, she was just doing her job. Billy was like a child under her care and he needed to be disciplined. What child likes to be disciplined? They don't. But it needed to be done. She can't be held responsible for him killing himself over it. As for recommending McMurphy to stay there, I got the feeling she was saying that so she could just to 'play' with him for her own amusement. Also because he brought some life to the place so she probably enjoyed that as well while she indulged in ruining his life.

reply

She knew how to set Billy off, she knew that telling him in front of everyone that she was going to tell his mother might cause him to commit suicide and she didn't care. All she wanted was to get back at MacMurphy and she couldn't stand it that he actually helped Billy.

Sorry but she made that comment specifically so she could break MacMurphy's spirit, it had nothing to do with Billy.

You dont' know that she thought he would commit suicide, You are all reading into the film because that's the thing to do these days: analyze & re-write. She was not thinking "let me taunt him, so he will kill himself". Nor is it a fact that she attacked Billy to get back at Mac. Damn analysis and assumptions, second-worst to Ordinary People. (you may have meant that she did not consider/ anticipate that Billy would commit suicide)

They will see what they want to see, from their own self-absorbed, narcissistic perceptions. If others aren't coming from their own deluded head space, then there is something wrong with them. Of course it has to become complex and complicated as well, to make it sound more intellectual.

I don't think you understand this film very well. Maybe you should stick to movies staring Adam Sandler and Pauly Shore.

I've never seen a Shore/Sandler film. Maybe when you ever overcome your " I'm in college 101 and know stuff" phase, you'll be qualified to review OFOTCK without the pseudo-intellectual assumptions and fantasies

reply

You seem to want to have things spoon fed to you. Unfortunately this film doesn't do a whole lot of that, you have to interpret the characters motivations and feelings based on their actions. It's OK though, Jack and Jill is probably more your kind of movie.

reply

You seem to want things formatted to fit your deluded interpretation, but the film is not intended for that. If you spoon feed yourself some perspective and objectivity instead of drawing unsupported subtext, then you will be more in harmony with film-going. Of course, the film needs to be very famous and popular to engage your embarrassing interpretation and guesswork. This is why OFOTCN is not your type of movie. I'm glad I could clarify. (Oh look! Mackenzie is wearing a red shirt, let's find some hidden meaning.)

reply

Except I'm not fitting it to my own interpretation, everything I said was based on supporting evidence from the film. Ratched knew Billy was suicidal, she knew that he was suicidal because of his failed attempts to get a woman and because of his mommy issues. There is absolutely no way that Ratched didn't at least suspect Billy would attempt suicide and she didn't care, breaking Mac's spirit was more important to her.

You don't understand the first thing about Ratched's character, do yourself a favor just give up on Cuckoo's Nest, you aren't smart enough for it.

In her mind, she may have thought shock-treatment was actually needed , not to seek revenge. This was the 50's (?) or so, and shock treatment was a common method, Her occupation-mindset (police-mentality of always being right) ) was separate from her personal shortcomings. But combined, it was disastrous.

Rathched wasn't a psychiatrist though. What business did she have recommending patients for shock treatment? She was a nurse who was in charge of the ward and administering the medication as recommended by the doctors. She must've had the medical team wrapped around her little finger too.

A lobotomy doesn't = death.

What do you mean "Symbolically"? Yeah, a lot of "symbolically" on the board.

But, no, death means to be dead, a lobotomized patient is not necessarily a zombie. Depending on the patient and severity of the lobotomy, they are not brain-dead, and can still think and participate in different facets of normal living.
