No screenplay nomination??

That's odd, particularly when just about every other award recognized it. BAFTA nod, Golden Globe nod, Writers Guild and it even won at the LA Film Critics award for "Best Screenplay". The Academy dropped the ball on that one, also for not nominating the screenplay for Jaws the same year.

Jaws had screenplay nominations at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and the Writers Guild.

The WGA even ranked Jaws as the 63rd best screenplay of all time:

Jaws has a marvellous screenplay, beautifully streamlining a pulp novel into a classic exercise in suspense and making room for characters far richer than we have come to expect in most character-driven films, let alone action blockbusters. It deserved a nomination. But back on-topic, Nashville should have been nominated for and won the original screenplay Oscar, hands-down.

This is a brilliant film but I can see why the screenplay was not nominated. The screenplay was just a basic outline of what the storyline was, most of the dialogue and interactions were improvised by the actors so the brilliance came not from the screenplay but from other avenues of creativity.
