I noticed that "Keep-a-goin" is credited to Richard Baskin/R.Reicheg.
I'm sure I saw Henry Gibson recite this as a poem on The Dick Van Dyke Show, and maybe again on Laugh-In. Why would the musical director of Nashville deny Henry his credit for this song-of-songs ? Anyone know?
You're correct. Gibson also recited the poem on "Laugh-In," on which he was a regular cast member. Gibson received credit in "Nashville" for writing the lyrics to this song, and Baskin set it to music. Hence, co-credits for this song. An insane woman later sued Gibson, yars after "Nashville," claiming he "stole" the song from her. In court, Gibson had documentation proving that he wrote it, and her suit was booted out.
Henry Gibson didn't steal the song from an insane woman. He stole it from a forgotten poet! The NASHVILLE song "Keep A Goin'" is a musicalization of an ancient poem of the seem title by Frank L. Stanton (1857-1827). As I recall, when Gibson was "poet lauerate" of ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN (1968-73), he sometimes recited decades-old sentimental and "inspirational" poems which had come to be considered comically "corny".
