Sorry- I just do not "get" this one. The Henry Gibson character was cartoonishly silly and nearly ruined the entire thing. I did love Ronee Blakley though.
It's nowhere near as good as McCabe, Short Cuts, or The Player (his 3 best in my opinion). I even like Brewster McCloud, 3 Women and The Long Goodbye better than Nashville. I am surprised that the Altman mafia hasn't attacked you yet, however. Try posting that you don't like MASH on the MASH board and see what happens.
I love Altman but MASH and Nashville are highly overrated. For an Altman fan of a certain age, however, these two comprise perhaps his best work.
I think Short Cuts is a far better version of Nashville (meaning a large ensemble cast with interwoven stories). Now I've done it. Soon a member of Altman's order of the white knights will be along to tell me that I am idiot with no taste, even though I like most of his work and love some of his work.
I will say something positive about Nashville: it has to be judged within its time frame. When it came out it was totally revolutionary and very ambitious. I appreciate the film for that reason if nothing else. I find it entertaining enough but again I also find it overrated by his fans.
