DVD release 6/3/08

MANDINGO is being released on DVD June 3, 2008. It's being issued by Legend Films, which has a licensing arrangement with Paramount to release many of that studio's older films. Apparently little if anything in the way of extras, but at least it's coming out. SRP is $14.99, and you might be able to get it direct from Legend before its official release date, but only at the full price. You'll save several dollars by waiting for June 3 and shopping around.

That's amazing. I'm surprised Paramount would touch this, but it's a piece of history and interesting for the time capsule. I assume it will be widescreen and at least include a trailer.

It is w/s and I believe has the trailer. Not so amazing, really. Paramount stopped releasing their older library over the past couple of years and as I noted in my amended OP, has now licensed Legend Films to do so. (I assume Paramount had to allow Criterion to go through their repository and pick out titles they wanted to release under their deal with that label.) But also, there's been a recent renaissance in the evaluation of the career of director Richard Fleischer, including a review of MANDINGO in the NY Sun newspaper a few weeks ago, and in conjunction with a retrospective of his work at Lincoln Center as well as other re-releases of his films. The release of MANDINGO may be part of this belated appreciation of the late (1916-2006) Mr. Fleischer's work.

You can see the original trailer for Mandingo on YouTube. The trailer that was shown back in 1975. You can also see acouple of scenes from Mandingo on YouTube. You have to go under Susan George's name to bring up the scenes from Mandingo.
