DVD
When will this become availible on DVD in the U.S.
shareNever,
I got Spanish PAL DVD and it was Damned Censored version.
Go to ebay. They have lots of DVD's of "Mandingo". But they are not factory made. They are bootleg copies. That's the only way you can get the movie on DVD. There is no official factory made copy of "Mandingo" released.

YES! I just watched the fight scene last night, and dang. Lots of blood and YES, blood pumping out of the other fighter's neck. Very nasty.
I still have to watch the last 40 min., but the print is awesome. Besides other uncut things noted, I have to check my other copies of this movie, but I don't remember the German lady who wants to buy Mede 1st, checking out his package before he is sold. That is in this uncut print.
And is it just me, or do we see more of Brenda Sykes in this version?
Overall, it seems like there is more violence that the other cut(s) that I have.
Okay - my other prints DO have the german lady checking out his...pork.
And now to CONFIRM. I recently bought and watched, directly from legendfilms.net using PayPal, the brand new Paramount release of Mandingo - before the official release date on the street
It says '121 minutes' on the back but it actually ran approx. 2:06:40 (2 hours, 6 minutes).
Right after I watched it, I compared it to my Mandingo other releases. The brand new PARAMOUNT release DOES have the Susan George sex scene with Mede, it's longer than my other releases, they show all of Mede's backside, and she's nude. It DOES have Brenda Sykes and 'Hammond' nude in bed together (other releases have Sykes in a night gown fanning her master who has pants on). It DOES have the lady in the whore house totally nude (other release I have, she's fully clothed when her client opens and closes her door. It DOES have the blood disgustingly gushing out of the other fighter's neck in the fight scene. It also DOES have the scene with Agamemnon (main house slave) being paddled in the barn with in full rear nudity (the other releases have a 2x6 blocking the far shot - this Paramount print is kind of hard to watch as they show his rear end getting worse and worse.)
The only possible thing that may have happened, is Legends printed so many on the 1st run with the original UNcut print, then realized they should've printed the censored version, or the U.S. ratings board found out they printed the uncut version and forced them to repress and some people ended up with the 2nd pressing (cut version).
It seems unlikely that Legend would do two different releases, I certainly hope not anyway as I'll be screaming blue murder if my copy isn't the uncut version when I get it from Amazon.com. It shouldn't be a problem for them anyway as it was legitimately rated R by the MPAA when originally released and that rating should stand. I think some people possibly have a more lurid memory of what was in the film and think they saw more than was actually in it which is why some may be saying there are still bits missing. From the descriptions by people who have seen the uncut DVD, it sounds like everything is there and I do thank you for confirming this for me.
shareYou keep referring to the new "Paramount" release. I take it you mean the new Paramount/Legend Films release. That's the only new release I'm aware of - at least here in the US.
I wonder what the ratings board would have to do with them altering the DVD release? Video releases aren't restricted to MPAA-approved versions of movies, but I guess they are required to match the film inside with the ratings designation on the box, so maybe Paramount/Legend decided it was easier to revert to the R-rated version of the film than to re-design the cover and change the "R" to "Unrated"? If so, that was a stupid solution, and an injustice to the consumer.
I just watched the DVD, as rented from Netflix, yesterday. It looks like the exact same print source as the old Paramount videotape, except the framing is opened up nicely by transferring it in 16:9 anamorphic. It's definitely the exact same, supposedly R-rated cut (I went back and watched the tape afterward): Every scene is intact, the way described above (lots of Brenda Sykes nudity, the nude in the whorehouse doorway, the German woman with her hand down the front of Ken Norton's pants), plus Perry King's frontal nudity (which went unmentioned above), except the close-up of the blood gushing out of the wrestler's torn neck after the scream in the fight scene. That shot must have been ordered excised by the ratings board before the movie could be released with an "R" rating [or something?!!].
But wasn't there supposed to be a brief frontal nude shot of Ken Norton somewhere in the film? I have some vague recollection that the film was famous for that. Maybe it was actually that frontal nude shots of Norton in the movie appeared in something like Playgirl Magazine at the time and that no such shot ever appeared in the release print of the film. Perhaps somebody with a better memory can clarify that.
I rented the film with the idea that I'd buy a copy if it were an improvement over the Paramount videotape I've had for years, but the DVD doesn't cut it. Despite the improved framing of the 1.78:1 image, the transfer is so dark and muddy that half the details are missing (you have to squint to tell when anybody actually is nude!). The old videotape is much brighter and the colours are more vibrant - and prettier - so I'm sticking with it... at least until a confirmed-uncut DVD version can be safely ordered retail.
WOO HOO! Finally!
sharejust received my copy through AMAZON. TOTALLY UNCUT, TRANSFER IS OK.HOPE LEGEND FILMS KEEPS THOSE PARAMOUNT OLDIES AVAILABLE LIKE LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, FRIENDS 1971,FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE.

Legend Films has struck a deal with Paramount to release a number of their titles. Some will be available through general release to retail chains (such as THE SKULL), but other Legend/Paramount titles are being exclusively released through Best Buy (such as THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH). I don't know if MANDINGO is one of the Best Buy exclusives, but Best Buy offers it on their website for $9.99. Check it out at
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8902556&st=mandingo&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=58833
Paramount Pictures licensed the film to Legend Films for its first official DVD release. The DVD was released on June 3, 2008, in 1.77:1 anamorphic widescreen without any extras.
