I remember seeing this being parodied on Saturday Night Live and the movie Hollywood Shuffle, back in the 80's but I had no idea this movie was actually real, LOL!! Man, I wish somebody would put this out on DVD. I'd buy it just for the guaranteed laughs it would generate..............
I was born three years after this movie was released, so yeah, probably..............I just remember the Saturday Night Live sketch with O.J. Simpson and Eddie Murphy and the "Black Acting School" scene in Hollywood Shuffle that poked fun at this movie.
I was born the same year that it was released. My mother allowed me to watch it when I was farly young because I think she felt that it was important that I learn about that time period.
My interest in seeing this movie is definitely piqued. I hope they decided to put it out on DVD at some point. After all, there are a lot of other blaxploitation type movies already out on DVD.
This movie is now on DVD. I just saw several copies today on eBay. They are "widescreen" but 118 minutes long. The original running time was 127 minutes. The laserdisc is 127 minutes. The video is 121 minutes. The sequel "Drum" is also on on DVD. I saw it on eBay today as well. I remember O.J. Simpson was in the Saturday Night Live parody "Mandingo 2". This movie has a huge cult following. It is also one of the worst films ever made. It is based on a novel which, like "Valley of the Dolls", sold millions of copies.
I saw this movie a very long time ago and don't really remember it in any real detail. I do however remember that I found it enjoyable. Perhaps if I saw it again I would think it was offensive, but I doubt it. I do remember being shocked at the final scene. I like the previous post found it more than just a little bit arousing.
this movie was crazy as hell, I dont know why people think it's total crap I guess just to not seem racist or something. It is actually a really good movie I was totally sucked in I didn't think that stuff like that could have possibly happened. Things like that you dont normally pondor. If you've ever seen Caligula then you would know a crazy movie that is just terribly made.
The "Uncut" widescreen DVD you see on Ebay is a total ripoff. The DVD claims to be 127 minutes but the movie is heavily edited down to 115 minutes. The best scenes are cut out (because of all the politically correct crap). Don't waste your money, its better to get the VHS version
You are so right tallpall. I bought the DVD off of Ebay about a year ago and was so disappointed. They DID cut out all the good stuff and I couldn't believe I had paid almost $20 to get a CUT version. I mean Hell, they used to show the uncut version on HBO for goodness sakes. Never again will I buy another movie off of Ebay. I don't even know where those jerks get the EDITED versions. After all I don't really think this was ever cut and shown on network TV.
I think when I say this I was like 14. My friends and I would stay up all night in the summer talking on the phone and watching tv. I say this and I was scarred for life lol. My favorite seen was when the slave owners wif was at the dinner party bragging on her new necklace and the slave(Debbie Morgan) comes strolling in with matching earrings. Or when the wife threatens the slave that if he doesnt make love to her that she'll tell that he raped her. He tore her ass up. I've been searching for a copy for yeras b/c my hubby thinks I'm making half of this stuff up.
A year or two ago I rented a 1979 VHS copy of this film and a 1986 VHS copy of its sequel "Drum" from an indie video store with a large inventory, just to see what the fuss was about. Horrible video transfers in both cases, but watchable. Neither was particularly well-made by today's standards, or even by the standards of the mid-70s, to be fair, but "Mandingo" was, overall, the better film. Trashy? Yes, to a degree. Campy? Here and there. But the film wasn't made with laughs in mind. It's actually very tragic and really quite memorable, despite its flaws.
Don't bother looking for a new copy of the film; it's been out of print for years and probably won't get released on DVD, due to its "controversial" nature and the fact that there's not a big demand for it. You could try Amazon for the VHS release of the film, which is from 1998, surprisingly enough. It's out of print there, too, but they do have links to offsite sellers. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6300216632/002-9360823-5216004
I have the DVDS from a company called "BLAX Film". It says on the DVD it is 127 minutes long. I have never seen the VHS so I dont know if anythings been cut.
I also thought MANDINGO was just a joke from the movie HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE. I had a friend who used to call himself MANDINGO, meaning he was a great lover....or well-endowerd or something.
A few years ago I bought the Leonard Maltin Video Guide and was shocked to find out MANDINGO really existed! I have been trying for years to find a copy so my husband bought MANDINGO and DRUM off eBay.
I'd love to see the "Cant Truss It" music video by Public Enemy.
The original running time of the film Mandingo was 127 minutes. The VHS version is 121 minutes. I just checked eBay and they are selling the full frame uncut 127 minute version on DVD. The listing states: "THIS VERSION INCLUDES THE OPENING SLAVE LINEUP WHERE SLAVE TRADER BROWLY INSPECTS THE PRIVATE PARTS. THIS FILMS IS NOT FOR CHILDREN. INCLUDES ALL THE NUDITY AND LANGUAGE NOT IN THE NEWER DVD VERSIONS." The widescreen DVD version I bought over a year ago is 118 minutes. The 127 minute full frame version was released on laserdisc. I still have not seen the censored scenes but the uncut 127 minute full frame Mandingo DVD is selling on eBay for under $10.
<< I'd buy it just for the guaranteed laughs it would generate... >>
I got this on sale today, because I was like, ""Well, okay...I guess this was an (appalling) milestone in Hollywood history, so I may as well finally see it and get it over with."
Uggghhh!!!
It's a horrible movie with fairly cheesy production design and many deeply uncomfortable scenes. I can't believe JAMES MASON stooped to appearing in it! I hope they paid him a fortune.
