White Folks love the smell of Magnatated Woman

I keep laughing everything I think of the scene where they're bathing Bertha to get her ready for her first encounter with Master Hammond. Bertha is a Mandingo virgin and it's Master Hammond's duty to take the virginity of all his female slaves.

The lady poured something in the water and says, "White folks loves the smell of a magnatated woman...keeps you smelling good for two whole days!"

Bertha can't stand the smell of the stuff and says, "You mean I have to smell like this for two days!"

Just what that stuff?

reply

Soap?

"The only person to celebrate Valentines Day the right way was Al Capone!". John Becker, M.D.

reply

I don't this it was soap. The lady was pouring some liquid out of a bottle. It didn't make bubbles.

I'm wondering was it magnesium salts?

reply

The "magnatated" is potassium permanganate, which is a powder that turns deep purple in water (and turns brown later) and is an antiseptic. It would indeed eliminate odor.

This movie is so embarrassing on so many levels, but I guess it only reflects the reality of those times. Some parts of the movie I can't even watch, I find myself cringing. I don't know which movie is more heart breaking & almost unbareble to watch between Mandingo & Uncle Toms Cabin.

reply

I've never seen Uncle Tom's cabin. I'll look for it and compare.

I find Mandingo interesting because it talks about all the stuff you would hear grown-ups whispering about around kids. It represents the uglier side of what went on 'behind the scenes'.

I'm more offended at the slaves having to bend over and get their behinds inspected. Still can't understand what, was it to see who could produce the bigger turd or what?

LOL!!!

I think he was checking for worms.

reply

Possibly, but according to the books, he also was checking for hemorrhoids (fancy word for piles).
