So I finally Watched it and....

I know it is meant to be a serious drama but it is kinda funny and Campy.
I laughed at loud at parts I pretty sure wasn't suppose to be funny, it just ugh they tried they just didn't do it. Thank goodness for Amistad and Roots or people would think Slavery was a joke.

I did have a favorite line
"After you hang me KISS MY ASS."

I would give it a 5.5 outta 10

"You can spank me it you want, I won't even cry unless you want me to." -Orphan

I just watched it and thought the exact opposite! I was expecting a campy C-movie but was surprised by the brutally frank depiction of the Ante-bellum South. Of course there was plenty of melodrama and salaciousness thrown in but it was a much better film than I could have imagined it would be.

I agree ML

I agree with the other two.
Some scenes were campy but the movie overall was quite intense.
Your favorite line is mine as well. Love that scene.

I found it to be equal parts trashy and intense.

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

reply

Intentionally funny and campy. But also genuine drama. Observes from distance.

It's not a perfect movie but I don't think it made slavery out to be a joke at all. I thought it was a brutal and justifiably uncomfortable portrayal.

I loved the fact that that mansion was about as derelict as could be, and no attempts were made to pretty it up. Maybe they found an actual old plantation house and that's why it looked the way it did. I saw the movie years ago in a theater and loved it then and love it now, although the ending is quite disturbing. I know it's a "potboiler," as netflix said, but it is based on a novel, and I suspect it wasn't beyond the realm of possibility back then for both the mistress as well as the master to dally with the help.
