It's not just that this movie has ninjas . . . it's that it takes such glorious pleasure in killing ninjas. Ninjas getting Uzi'd. Ninjas getting thrown off boats. Ninja's getting their butts kicked by cripples. Ninja's falling down staircases.

I have a theory it was part of Peckinpah's plan to make one of the worst action movies of all time. Yes, ninjas getting their collective asses kicked by a guy with a cane, who doesn't even break a sweat. Riiiight.

I always thought it was a post-Bruce Lee, 'kung fu is a hot trend' thing...
granted--not one of Peckinpah's better efforts...

Even worse, overweight, out-of-shape Burt Young shrugs off three ninjas attacking him at the same time and barely breathes heavily!

This had to be the world's worst bunch of ninjas. Lowest-bidder ninjas. This movie should have been subtitled "The Ninjas that couldn't kill straight".

"...by the director who got depressed and overdosed drugs while filming."

reply

Well, Peckinpah hated this movie (could not change the screenplay), directed only parts of it, and actually overdosed on cocaine while filming.

Why were there Ninja in the first place? The protectee and the "bad guys" were Chinese. Ninja are Japanese.

I thought the same thing. WTF? I thought they were going back to Communist China, then the ninjas showed up? They were going back to democratic Japan?

Had to LOL at Burt Young tossing ninjas into the water.

The scene with tubby Burt Young effortlessly taking out three ninjas was absolutely priceless.
