It should have been over when (Spoiler)
It should have been over soon after Duvall dies. Either have him die later or end the film sooner.
Once he died it didn't matter. His doing to Caan what he did was what made the audience seek further into the story. The whole thing about the guy going back to Japan got really tiresome, boring. They should have bunched those two stories closer together.
By the way, why was Bo Hopkin's character seen as sort of a bad guy; is it because he loved guns? I felt a liberal bent edging him into a "villainous" type of character, or someone on the edge of being evil. In my opinion Bo was the best damn character in the movie.
I liked Burt Young's character okay but he began to preach too much, and it was obvious his "regular guy blue collar" character was speaking too much for the filmmaker and/or writer of the film and/or book. Got irritating.
These are my thoughts, sue me if I go too long.
