Hooper...

Forgive me for being late to the game, maybe this has been asked already but I have no idea. But regarding Matt Hooper, we learn in the film that he was quite wealthy but nothing else. Does the novel itself elaborate any on this? As to where he came from & how he was so rich, what business his family was in? I’m just wondering if the novel had more details on his character. Thanks.

He's very different in the novel, a spoiled handsome preppie who screws Brody's wife, or tries to. Sorry it's been decades since I read the book, which wasn't memorable.

In the movie, he's a geeky scientist, who doesnt care about his family or his wealth, except as a means of funding shark research. And since none of the characters care about his background, it's assumed the audience doesnt either.

Thanks Otter. Yeah I actually read about that on the Wiki page for him & I was shocked to learn this! Just goes to show that even “Jaws” as great as it is probably had the book crowd who were incensed at the changes made like anything else today.

Never had any clue about this, I’m glad I didn’t actually, it’s hard to reconcile the movie Hooper who’s quite a departure vs the Hooper from the novel.

Actually, movie Hooper was a lot better. The book was mediocre, and the movie was much better.

IIRC book Hooper died, and I wasn't sad at that. I remember liking him much more in the movie and wouldn't have been happy with the same outcome in the book

In the book, a younger Ellen dated Hooper’s brother. She always dreamed of living the good life, and it’s implied that she settled by marrying Brody. (By the way, the book Brody and Ellen are nowhere near as likable as their movie versions.) In the book Ellen does have a one day fling with Hooper (it’s poorly written and out of place), but she does regret it afterwards.

The movie is superior in almost every way to the book. The only part of the book that equals the movie is the opening attack.
