Haven't seen this movie, only read book...

As fascinated as I was, the abrupt ending was a let down. How does the movie end? Does it answer the questions left open by the novel?

I was mostly curious about Jacqueline and Rene. Did he ever manage to take her to Roissy? O felt they could get her to enter Roissy "just for a visit" and force her to stay, but by the end of the book, it was made clear Jacqueline was a lot smarter than people gave her credit for. In fact, she was the one manipulating Rene. And since she had contempt for O's position as a slave, I don't think she would have gone to Roissy willingly.

BTW, I read the sequel, but it was awful. We never learn what happens with Rene and Jacqueline. The subplot involving Sir Stephen and Carl is laughable.

Worse, the sequel completely ruins what worked about the original novel. As disturbing as it sometimes was, The Story of O was about love. Return to the Chateau is about prostitution, plain and simple. Roissy is no longer an elite club for gentlemen, it's a whorehouse where wealthy customers hire women that will have sex and be abused for money. Sir Stephen is no longer O's lover or master - he's her pimp.

And of course, we're left again with a question - will O stay at Roissy or leave? On the one hand, she admits her past as a photographer is a dim memory, implying she couldn't go back. Also, she's impressed by how much money she makes as a prostitute, although it's not clear whether it matters to her. On the other hand, she hates the physical abuse. As she says in the novel, when she's whipped, she'd give anything in the world for it to stop. She clearly did it to please her master and lover, but would she be willing to stay at Roissy as a free lancer?

The best way to answer your questions about the movie is just to see it; it isn't like it's expensive or hard to find any more.

As for Return to the Chateau, you're not alone in your hatred of the book.

The movie has a more abrupt ending than the book, with less information.
