Question about book ending

I just finished reading the book, and from this board, I already knew the book had a different ending than the movie. What startled me was that my book ends with a paragraph in italics that gives the "alternative" endings. I expected a fuller description of what happened to O after the owl party. Is it possible that I have copy that has been censored/edited? Or is the true ending that abrupt, italicized paragraph?

reply

That's the true ending, all right.

Woman is the Earth and Man is the Sky.

I hate to sound whiny, but I really wish there was a full chapter on that part of the story.

I feel like I didn't get the complete experience of O's transformation.

reply

you should look for a book titled 'return to the chateau'

This is the actual ending of the book as written by Pauline Reage, the original publisher had removed almost a third of the book without telling Pauline, which is why she insisted on the 'double ending'.

reply

Thanks for clarifying. I wondered what the purpose of the sequel was. It reminds me of John Hughes remaking Pretty in Pink as Some Kind of Wonderful just so that he could get the ending that he wanted.
