Rene and Sir Stephen's relationship

i've seen the movie and read the book many times but i don't quite understand the relationship between Rene and Sir Stephen. There is something weird about it that i just can't figure out. It's illustrated here in this page: http://www.scribd.com/doc/21111417/5/You-belong-to-Sir-Stephen-first

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about who Sir Stephen was to Rene? Why did Rene want his approval so much? Why did he train O for Sir Stephen and keep living with her if she "first" belongs to Sir Stephen? i just always feel like i'm missing something...

This is Europe, remember, and a fairy-tale Europe at that. Rene clearly owes Sir Stephen some enormous debt and is bound by honor to repay it; certainly he got Rene into Roissy, but probably more than that. Perhaps Rene owes his career to Sir Stephen as well, or even more.

Woman is the Earth and Man is the Sky.

its simple rene had a bromance with sir stephan

here's the urban dictionary for the description of bromance

1. The act of wooing a fellow male friend for the purpose of becoming closer.
2. Going to unusual lengths in an attempt to become closer with another male friend.

Yes, this seems more like it to me... but with no explanation but so much written about it... and how Rene examines Sir Stephen's face more than O's... it's just weird and i wish i understood their dynamic better. It seems stronger than your average bromance to me. But, it was the 70's...
