Ernest Greene is a director of American adult cinema who recently has adapted The Story of O the XXX way.

In 2006, Greene directed "O - The Power of Submission". Despite being an adult feature with lengthy hardcore sex scenes, it has quite a bit of dialogue and Greene sticks closely enough to the original novel (furthermore, his great passion for it is clearly evident). His choice to move the story to contemporary L.A. and to make it a bit more realistic is interesting.

Greene, who has dealt in BDSM-related cinema for years, albeit without much of a storyline, has now finished a sequel to his first O film, called "The Surrender of O". This will be out early November. It, too, seems quite promising, possibly even more refined than the first part.

While the hardcore porn genre might not be for some readers of this forum (I myself am a very selective fan), I recommend the more adventurous ones to check Greene's O films out (a quick google search will set you off). I find it a brave attempt to inject some intelligence, even eroticism, into a pretty rough industry. One can only hope it will create at least a minor trend.

I'm also curious to hear whether anyone else knows about these films and what you think.

I remember Ernest Greene's name from the days when HOM used to produce magazines and videos. In addition to directing, he was sometimes credited as "bondage master" in the films I've seen, and he also wrote short stories for the magazines.

I have not seen Greene's updated Story of O series, so I can't comment on that. Before the advent of the World Wide Web, HOM (which I think used to stand for House of Milan) was one of the few producers to distribute consistently high-quality BDSM magazines and videos; the videos aimed for storylines and production values while supplying the various fetishes. Thanks to the web, I don't even know if they are still in business as the web flooded the market with countless producers from all over the world, but for a couple of decades at least HOM was the place to go.

Boy, that name takes me back. Greene even appeared in a few videos.

I like what Nina Hartley said about The Power of Submission...

Carmen is fantastic and acts her ass off. She is on 44 out of 49 pages of script. We didn’t have to cut a single word due to someone not knowing his or her lines. She brings a depth to the character that was totally missing in the first film adaptation, which was insipid, dopey and had exactly zero understanding of either the people involved or of the sex in which they engaged. All of the supporting players are equally good.

I’m sure we’d love to see O running in theaters for a long time to come. Of course, our running time is 160 minutes, so that could be a problem for us as well.

Ernest made the conscious decision to focus on relationship elements (while still sneaking in some modern-style kink here and there, such as shibari ropework and suspensions) which were really the engine of the original story. If we’d wanted to make a big, fancy bondage movie we could have, but we were looking to attract a wider audience that we felt responded to the strange love story that sustains the novel, which really is more about D/s sex than sophisticated kink technique.
