Do you think they really went back for the cat?

At the very end of the film do you think Speed and Poe
went back for Chaney's cat?

I trust Poe, but not Speed!

Chaney knew this.

Chaney gave some money to Poe to take care of the cat, and money to Speed to take care of Poe. If Speed didn't do his part and it got back to Chaney, I wouldn't have wanted to be Speed.

Yes.

Poe was a Southern gentleman and Chaney was his friend.
Chaney asked him, and paid him to take care of something.
Poe would be honor bound to do it.

Speed: "Oh he sure was something wasn't he?"

Poe says: "Let's go get the cat."

Speed silently agrees.

Yes, I think that out of respect for Chaney and the impact he left on them, especially Speed, they did go back. Actually imo that was a key line in the film because it showed the development of the characters and the impact their relationship with Chaney had had on them. I think that's why the line was put in; otherwise it could have just been left with Chaney telling them about the cat. But it was, if memory serves me correctly the final line, right after they say "he sure was something...".
