There are a number of 8-shot .38/.357 revolvers currently on the market (Taurus and Smith/Wesson, maybe others). I don't know what 8-shot revolvers they had in the '30s, but the one fired in the movie was a large-frame revolver, and could very well have been an actual 8-shot.
