the cat as a metaphor for chaney

tough, independent, comes and goes as he pleases. has a cat's way of saying goodbye--just walks away...

Except that instead of just walking away from Speed and Poe at the end he handed them a very generous gift before boarding that freight car.

The other aspects I agree with completely.

I agree with both of you - at first we're meant to see the parallels between Chaney and the cat....then, in the end, when Chaney gives Speed and Poe the gift, we're meant to see one of the things that separates humans from animals - the ability to sympathize and be generous. Of course, this is just my opinion...I also think this is hinted at a couple of times throughout the film, when Chaney talks about the "in-betweens". Cats have no use for in-betweens...they just want to eat and sleep. But, Chaney doesn't cling to these in-betweens either. Once he fills them, he's gone...like a cat. We can assume he'll try to fill those in-betweens when he feels the need again, presumably in another town.

Agreed, there are definitely metaphors between the two.

he also identified with the bear...he sees himself as outside of society

True, but when Lucy tried to force Chaney into some for of stability/commitment, he dropped her like a bad habit.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

More like she dropped him.

"Sorry. If I've not responded to you either it wasn't necessary or I've set you to Ignore."

Chicken or egg....if I treat a woman so indifferently that I couldn't care if she comes or goes...so she then goes - did I drop her, or did she drop me?

In this case, she dropped him.

"There's somethin' I gotta tell you. I don't think you should drop by anymore.
Things have changed. I think I'm movin'. I'm gonna get a better place. I got a better offer. Someone that spends the night. He's even got a steady job."

"Looks like you got things all figured out." (Chaney walks off)

Yep, I recall all of that....one of my all-time fav movies.

However, her even saying all that shows that she was hoping that would spur him on to make a commitment to her....nope.

That's possible too. I don't recall seeing or hearing the guest.

You´re completely wrong. And inexperienced in women i guess. She doesn´t have anyone in her room as she said to Chaney.Hill even films the inside of her house when she opens the door. That was just a test to see if Chaney would "beg" to stay with her and to see if he really wanted to commit. Obviously he didn´t. He dropped her and not the other way around. That´s the all point of the movie and the Chaney character.

Oh, a "'No' means 'Yes'" kind of expert on women. LOL. Good luck, Romeo.

Chaney said "Hey, Poe. I got a cat back at my place. I want you to take care of it for me."

Then Speed and Poe talking about going down to Miami, followed by

Speed "Oh, he sure was somethin'."
Poe: "Let's go get the cat."
Speed: "Yeah."

I took that to mean they, in turn, we're going to do Chaney the "favor" of taking Lucy (Jill Ireland) along for the relocation (better, richer surroundings).

Six one ways, half a dozen the other. I got the impression they BOTH wanted to ultimately move on. 👋
