'Liver Patte'

That was totally cat food right????

reply

the label on the can said pate. it was probably a cheap brand they could afford.

reply

Whatever it was, it appeared that Little Edie fed it to the cats as well!

well i wouldnt put it past them!!

reply

Yeah, I've only seen GG once, but I took it as they just happened to be feeding the cats at the same time...I did think it was cat food at first.
What about the one she made for the camera guy and sat it on the filthy counter top. No paper towel, no plastic plate, lmao!

reply

The pate was, indeed, human food. It's an inexpensive brand of pork liver pate that can still be purchased today (and the label is identical).

The expensive pate someone else referred to is goose liver pate or foie gras. This is not only more expensive but also more controversial... the geese are typically force-fed and fattened to the extreme in order to increase the size of the liver. The pork liver pate is using the by-product of commercial pork production (although it's still industrial meat production).

Considering they spent $150 a month on ice cream (that they ate with a knife)...
Guess they had their pleasures and ate what they chose.

tody,
you could buy ice cream by the pint back then for as little as $.19.
they weren't buying premium name brands, they weren't buying gallons at a time with no freezer.
do you really think they spent $150 a month just on ice cream?

big edie liked to talk to call attention to herself. she also liked to lie to make herself look better.

reply

Yes LilyPad I read that in a book. It may have been in the 2009 Maysles book. And the brand name on the ice cream in the Doc is Bordens (not a cheap brand I think) and yes they were small containers then. They indulged in what made them happy and I guess that is what counts.

But here is one reference to $150 but this is not where I originally read it.

tody,
the brand name i saw was hersheys', there were other containers with no name on them. hershey ice cream is anything but premium and a no name brand is less than that. ice cream has always been sold in pints, half gallons are relatively new.

i just read that article, i don't put much stock in what she said. was she talking about the hbo film?

reply

Like I said I read it in another book, I think the 2009 book with pics I think. I got the book at the University library vs buying it (expensive book about $45). Surely not the HBO movie.
I am sure you can find more on the web by googling it.

The hot-link to the article is http://www.autismawarenesscentre.org/maureen-s-blog/the-beales-of-grey -gardens.html The author seems to be talking more about Asperger Syndrome than GG. She's using the doc as an example, and it's obvious she knows very little about GG. In fact, she says the Maysles' movie was made in 1976. I certainly wouldn't use this article as the be-all and end-all for GG. Not much info here.

lpp,
i don't think she knows beans about the ladies. i also don't think much of her as someone who is into autism or aspergers either since she thinks she can diagnose someone from a movie.

reply

Sorry LilyPad but I did read it in a "reputable" book somewhere. I just used google and found that autism article which I did not read before. I also thought it strange they spent so much on ice cream. They had that small fridge that must have had a very small freezer. They did get food stamps and did get "groceries" every day (for the cats and raccoons...). Says that in Wrights book. We will probably never know all till someone writes the diffinitive book. Someone was supposed to be writing a book called A Staunch Character (about little edie). Someday I will check out the Maysles 2009 book again.
And if they ate that much ice cream they would both be very obese I think.

tody,
those little refrigerators have tiny freezers that don't freeze anything, we have one just like it here.
the edies didn't get food stamps, big edie refused to give the information required. lois wright brought the apps to gg, she got them for herself but the edies didn't get them.
the only one i know who is supposedly writing a book is jerry and he's a giant liar. i'd never touch his book if he ever pulls it off.

that cheap ice cream they bought was all air whipped, there are no calories in air! that's why they didn't gain weight.

The brand name I saw was Hershey's, too. Do they even make Hershey's ice cream anymore? I didn't even know that Hershey's made ice cream until I saw the documentary.

reply

Yes, Hershey's Ice Cream is still around. It's an entirely different company from the chocolate conglomerate and is mostly only available in New England and a few other northeastern states.

reply

I just had to come back and post this. Today, as I was driving along, I stopped at a red light...and guess what? I was behind a HERSHEY'S ICE CREAM TRUCK!!!! I couldn't believe it. I've never in my life seen a Hershey's ice cream truck until today. The driver pulled into a gas station, and I was so tempted to stop and ask him if he was making a delivery or just "passing thru"....LOL I'm still waiting to see it in our local grocery stores, but so far, no success with that.
