If they remake this movie, they should cast Owen Wilson... !

... Not that I'm suggesting they DO this, BTW; just that I felt his type of mannerisms echo those of Redford's throughout the movie...

Wilson might be a little too young, though. Redford was a perfect mix - just young and pretty enough to be the debonair flyboy, yet old enough to diplay his fading youth (a symptom of how his world is changing, symbolized even more by Newt Potts.) Redford was young-ish, but not young. Wilson needs to age about ten years to pull it off. And, even then, I don't think he'd hold a candle to Redford in this role.

However, hopefully this discussion is moot. If they try to re-make this, they'll ruin it with CGI and over-the-top action scenes. Granted, Hollywood is nearly bankrupt of ideas (Steve Martin as Inspector Clousseau? Is it the Apocalypse?) but I REALLY hope thery stay away from this one. They already insulted one of my other favorite aviation movies (Flight of the Phoenix) with a Bruckheimer-esque remake. Don't let them touch this one!!!!

I have the soul of a writer - or at least the liver of one...

Hmm, Waldo Pepper has to be taken seriously sometimes. I could never take Wilson seriously.

I agree! He would be great!

I agree with casting Owen Wilson, but not as a pilot or anyone serious.

No, Owen Wilson would be picture-perfect as "Mary Beth" (formerly played by Susan Sarandon).

reply

haw haw haw Agreed, Wilson is a puss.

The only part for which I would cast him would be as the little kid who fetches gas for Waldo at the very beginning of the film. At some point in his life, someone played a very cruel, cruel joke on Owen Wilson when they told him he could act.

Enough of these remake threads. They'll never be able to remake it because everything would be CGI.

What a time for movie making. I love the aviation scenes and I've always loved this movie. I can't even say it's underrated because it's almost unheard of. Why isn't it ever on TV?

reply

They just showed this movie on ABC TV in Australia. Was great to see it again. And I agree regarding the hypothetical remake discussion - CGI in this kind of film is no where as good as the real thing.

I do not agree with lucman-1.

I will rather say, enough with these replies telling us we can`t write our suggestions to potential remakes. Personally I see it as a challenge (to myself) if I can find contemporary actors/actresses that could take on these roles. For me it is fun and even more exciting if someone agrees with me. Then ofcourse comes those idiotic posters to tell me that I can`t tell the world about those ones I easily could imagine doing the remakes.

If you don`t like these remake threads, just ignore them.

reply

This isn't technically a 'remake thread', since I'm not advocating it as a good idea... !

I've been in love! Just 'cos I've never been to Zimbabwe to buy someone a cake!

No, they most definitely should not remake it.

Yeeeah.... yeeeaahhhh. They could cast Owen Wilson as Pepper, and maybe... Jim Carrey as Olssen! And they could make it a comedy!! Wait... no, that movie was already made; they called it 'Dumb And Dumber'. Aptly. Okay, how about Ben Stiller as Olssen? No, that would be 'Zoolander' and/or 'Zoolander 2', not to mention the other eight films those two have teamed up in.

Maybe let's not think about Owen Wilson in a serious film role requiring actual acting skills. After all, somebody needs to be Ben Stiller's Second Banana (or tenth, as the case may be), and this seems to be the role for which Wilson is much better practised, and probably much better suited. Just saying.

Robert Redford isn't the world's greatest actor, either... He's a movie star, and that requires its own qualities... but you don't cast him if you want somebody who can disappear into a role.
