drunk straight by the French bartender when Doyle was drinking whiskey...anyone know it was? The only green drinks I know are Creme de Menthe and Chartreuse and these are mixers.

I believe Absinthe is usually watered down, and I didn't see that happen.
also, Doyle was eating what looked like a boiled egg. I've never heard of a boiled egg being served as a bar snack anywhere....does anyone know what he was eating?

shareIn French cafés (not upscale bars but the typical local café) it is very common for hard-boiled eggs to be available as a quick snack. It's not like peanuts or potato chips, you pay for them.
shareFor my money, I hope it isn't creme de menthe, and it just isn't the right colour anyways. Absinthe was not a terribly popular drink in the 70s as Pernod, the apertif created to replace Absinthe following its ban, was (and remains) well-established in French gastronomy, particularly in the south. Marseilles is not far from the region where Chartreuse is produced (Voiron, Isère, about 200 miles inland), and it appears you can see a blotchy symbol on the label that could be the Carthusian badge that all legal Chartreuse carries. Most importantly, Chartreuse is the only liquor of these that you can drink THAT MUCH, straight from the bottle, and not fall over or throw up. For my money, it's Green Chartreuse. Santé, Popeye.

I don't know how old you are, but years ago many dive bars (shot and a beer joints) had hard boiled eggs , along with pickled eggs in a jar at the bar.
They were as gross as they sound.

It was a boiled egg...and you just haven't hung around the right (or wrong) kinds of bars.
Chartreuse is my bet. Absinthe was banned in Europe until recent years when it emerged again but with an amended, and less lethal, recipe.

Always thought it was absinthe cause the bartender would pick something expensive and didn't get often. And hard boiled eggs were very popular bar items at one time - replaced with all sorts of things now.

I hung out in some dive bars when I was in my 20's and the bars had hard boiled eggs. It did not look like Gene was enjoying eating the egg.

If it was set in modern days, I'd have guessed Midori.
Probably because that's the only green liquor I know.
