Oliver Reed the best Athos.

He is believable as a drunkard. He is excellent in action scenes. (How the hell hot was it in Spain in Summer???).
But he really does an amazing job with his meeting with Milady at the Inn.
The pain he conveys is outstanding. "Is it really possible to insult you!?!?!" The menace of "Have you ever seen a woman shot in the stomach?". His sad goodbye to her despite his anger, shame, and outrage.

He really was an outstanding actor, and provided a great performance. Natural, genuine, and well done.

Oh yes. No contest. He was one of the best things about these movies.

I keep looking for other good movies of his, but they seem hard to find.

I’ve had to watch a lot of them online but I’ve been able to watch some of them on Amazon like Rage to Kill, Hired to Kill, The Revenger, The Triple Echo, Assault in Paradise, Revolver, and Dr Heckyll and Mr Hype.

Yes, very good acting, though Athos is far from a drunkard in the book.

Liked his slashing, high energy swordfighting too.

I watched both the Three Muskateers and the Four Muskateers when I was very young-- probably when they were first shown on television sometime in the mid-'70s, and remember nothing other than utterly enjoying every bit of them both. I'd forgotten about these films until this popped up in the "trending" list, and now I'm curious to watch them both again as an adult and see what I make of them.

You should! I'[d say the best version of the Musketeers ever done.

Also try to catch the 1989 The Return of the Musketeers that virtually all the actors came back for.

Return of the Musketeers was a disappointment to me, despite having all the actors return

It was financed by Cannon Films, who made a lot of trash back then (along with some gems like Runaway Train and Street Smart), so I might've been prejudiced

I agree. He's completely convincing as the man of action who is the leader of the group because he's the smartest, the toughest, and the most charismatic. And he also brings the sense of roiling psychosis under the surface, the anger and self-destruction that was normally hidden, except for the fervor in battle that comes of having nothing to lose.

As for his Athos being drunk a lot, well, Reed was a big-time alcoholic, he brought real authenticity to that part of the role! And why not, the story was set in an era when drinking water was unsafe, so everyone who could afford alcohol drank wine or beer all day, just for hydration. Of course most people drank low-alcohol wine or beer so they could function, but I don't think spending a lot of time shitfaced was outside the norm. So why not give the character that dimension?
