shareSmall world! I enrolled at UC Riverside in 1971! And I was still there when they made this film. There was kind of a buzz on campus while it was happening. One of my college friends was an entomology major; and he was extra jazzed about it. At the time it was being filmed, it was called "The Hephaestus Plague". He was bummed when the title was changed to "Bug".
shareThey should have stayed with the first title! I never knew that! I used to go to the UCR open house each year. I loved the science talk! The professor on a bed of nails and the big smoke rings blown out of the cube were fun!
shareI remember those UCR open house science talks too. I was a physics major as an undergraduate there; and one of the physics profs did those "Mr Science' demos, as I recall. I can picture what he looks like, but I can't remember his name. I think one of the chemistry professors did those demos sometimes too. I had both of those guys for the introductory physics and chemistry courses.
But to get back to the topic of film: These posts we are making on the Message Boards for "Bug" and "Strait Jacket" inspired me to search IMDB for other films with a Riverside location. Ones that I remember include "Genesis II" (1973) and "Buddy Buddy" (1981). I was still in Riverside for both of them, and I remember them being filmed. "Genesis II" was set in the future, and it used the area of UCR in front on the main library and Humanities buildings as a location for a futuristic city. When "Buddy Buddy" was filming, my friend Mark and I were eating at Templo del Sol Mexican restaurant. And he leaned back to the people at the table behind us to ask for a light for his cigarette, and the person he asked turned out to be Jack Lemmon who was at the restaurant with Walter Matthau (both of whom were in town filming the movie).
So Funny! Buddy Buddy filmed part is it across the street from where I worked! I got to be an extra for 2 days! But my part didn't show with the movie. but I still have my pay stub! when I first started going to the UCR science lectures, there were two of them. Then there was just one. there had been a chemistry professor I think, that wore a funny wig one time!
