Ever heard the expression 'No sex please, we're British'? It's taking the p!ss out of uptight Brits. Also known as irony my friend.

Sorry, had to correct spelling. Uptight don't you know?

Effort is not concerned with results.

We don't know for certain that's it's a sexless marriage although it's a fair bet.Her treatment of him probably banishes all his desires.
It's often mentioned about how they ever got together in the first place.Generally I think the idea was that he was quite refined ,handsome and charming when he was younger and Sybil ,though a little coarse, came from quite a prosperous pub owning family. The two kind of married for their own reasons.

Interesting take, but the line that always sticks with me is "15 years! When I think what I might have had!" Exactly what might she have had?

"My brain rebelled, and insisted on applying logic where it was not welcome."

reply

Well it's interesting.
IN the Psychiatrist episode Basil says twice a week (maybe lying)
Cleese reckons it's rare
and Prunella Scales reckons they have more than the show implies.

So who knows, but the fact they sleep in seperate beds might be a bit of a giveaway.

I actually dont know how they even managed to stay married for so long, or how they could stand one another? They were both very obnoxious people!
What they saw in each other I still dont know, or how they married!

So I wonder if they in fact loved or at least cared about each other? Cause in some episodes I got the impression that they deep down really loved each other. Like that episode with the Australian lady who stayed at the hotel, and that Latin guest checked in where both Sybil and Basil became jealous? That made me really wonder if they somehow loved each other.
And that earlier episode in which Sybil got drunk and showed some affection towards Basil also made me wonder?

I reckon they were at it like bunnies, banging away like an outhouse door in a gale.

Probably for financial reasons, especially if they owned the Hotel jointly.

I'm a hardcore slash fan, so basically I see it in everything I, well, see. My theory is that he's sexually attracted to Manuel (but doesn't realise it), which is why he smacks him around all the time. The smack in the head is like an act of penetration. ...Wow I've been watching this show only for, what? Four days? And I've already read far too much into the Basil/Manuel relationship. If you can call it that. O.O

Basil's a bit of a horndog, I'm sure he hops on Sybil from time to time. But, what trope in a comedy show is more used than the tired of sleeping with one's wife? Plus he's British and all that

Sybil was hella sexy back then - the tight skirts, the high heels, the BOSSINESS!! She looks freakish now in real life but then so do I, forty years on. Sexy or not, the joy and the physicality goes out of most marriages (OR SO I'M TOLD if my wife is reading). I can't recall details but I'm sure there were just a COUPLE of glimpses that they had a friendly, respectful relationship. Maybe in The Anniversary - he was planning a surprise party for her and she was genuinely upset when she thought he had forgotten. Neither of those things would happen in a loveless marriage.
