I think a case might be made that Basil is dead, and this is hell, where he suffers the eternal punishment of dealing with Sybil and aggravating guests.

Exhibit A: In Basil the Rat, Sybil says to Basil: You're not living. 

"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"
