Baretta and the cigarette


Ever notice Baretta always has a cigarette in his mouth but its never lit?? lol

I know it was because he had quit smoking, but he always had to have it there, as a reminder as the character.

In reality, the Detective that the show was based on was a former cop who became an addict. I haven't watched the show in 30+ years, so not remembering it distinctly, but it seemed like Barretta said he was an addict, too.

I did happen recently to see a video of the real Detective, David Toma, who went from being a cop who became an addict after losing his son, to being a motivational speaker, counseling high school students to stay clean and sober. For the time, the video was pretty graphic and "scared straight" style.

He mentioned on the video that there were 2 police dramas (Toma & Barretta) based on his life as a detective, who donned disguises within 30 sec. to 1 minute. I remember watching both shows, and especially Barretta as he would disguise himself.
