Mr. Mumps is finally on DVD!!!

October 5, 2004: Rhino Home Video issued two 2-DVD sets called Horrible Horrors Vol. 1 and Horrible Horrors Vol. 2, each containing eight "bad" fright flicks from Crown International. Vol. 1 includes "Twisted Brain", although it is listed on the box as "Horror High".

The film looks like a dub of a VHS print but it appears to be different than the video master used for the VCI Home Video tape issued in the 80's. While the VCI print was a bit splicy, the one on this DVD is relatively splice free. However, quality wise, it is much more fuzzy/grainy/murky than the VCI tape.

I believe that "Horror High" was originally shot in 16mm, blown up to 35mm for theatrical release, then reduced back down to 16mm for distribution to TV stations--at this time, receiving a name change to "Twisted Brain". The 16mm redux would explain the graininess and murkiness of the prints.

A while back, Something Weird video issued a trailer from "Horror High" on their "Asylum of Satan" DVD. The trailer quality looks great (limited grain, great contrast and color) and features a few alternate shots that are not in the final film. Hopefully, Something Weird could issue a better version of "Horror High" struck from a 35mm print unless of course Rhino holds the exclusive on the Crown library.

Oh well, at least it is available on DVD now and that should be cause for celebration for the devoted "Twisties" that have made comments on this site.

Quality, shmality, I'd buy it for the theme song alone: "...a victim of NIGHTMARES..."

Was Mister Mumps a hamster or a guinea pig? Ah, who cares? I'm off to hunt for the dvd!!!

The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once.

I agree - I saw this as a kid and would take it whatever quoality it came in - a friend got it off ebay as a COPY and still was not "mad" about it! So, its on DVD now, eh?

SO, have you seen the quality of this new DVD copy?
All I have is a copy of a video copy, so that's good for now, I guess!

I looked for (your?) review on www.beardyfreak.com, but could not find it - not sure what/where the 'external links' page was, but I did see some great links to some other cool horror websites - thanks!!
