Was the tower's final fate mentioned?

That is, was it mentioned whether the burned tower would be demolished or repaired?

reply

It wasn't mentioned, though Newman's character expressed wishing for the tower to remain as it is as a "shrine to all the bullsh't in the world".

reply

I don't think that San Franciscans would welcome the dangerous burned -out hulk as a tourist attraction.

We have to go back Kate!

Depending on insurance it would maybe be repaired I reckon, but not by Duncan, he was flat broke, it would probably be sold on the cheap to another contractor.

South American countries are littered with half finished buildings where the owner had exactly the correct amount to finish it bar any cost overruns or accidents and as is the norm with any building cost overruns and accidents are to be expected.

I was watching a docu about skyscrapers in the likes of Brazil and Venezuela and so on that were abandoned unfinished and get used as vertical favelas by everybody.

You don't know sh!t, Jon Snow!

I always took the moment where McQueen tells Newman about how there's going to be more and more fires like this "until someone asks us how to build them." Newman then looks back at the building before he tells him, "All right, I'm asking." It's maybe a subtle indication that he's going to stay in San Francisco and maybe want to redo the building, done right and not go off to his little dream job of designing a rural community.

They would have had to demolish the building. Not only was almost all of it damaged beyond realistic repair, but it had so many inherent flaws that trying to keep some of it as a base to rebuild on would have been a waste of time and money. Plus the public wouldn't have had any confidence in a "repaired" 135-story fire trap.

Tear down and rebuild...or don't rebuild. But get rid of it.

Mr. Duncan -- tear down that hall!

PS: I love poster Darvidd's reply above about another poster's reference to a burned-out hulk in San Francisco: "Arnold Schwarzenegger?"

reply

it wasn't stated what happened to the building after the end of the movie tho the Newman-McQueen conversation as to Newman asking how to build one safely is an interesting take on the possible fate of the tower ...

but really, even if they made it safe, who would buy space in it after that fire? i think it would be impossible to find anyone to trust any builder after that fire

take care,
cormac

It survives and in the 23rd Century there are apartments in the tower once again, the most famous resident being Admiral James T. Kirk! http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Apartment
