And why he tried to resist Lightfoot's charms. He knew the two were falling in love. Had nothing to do with physical love, homosexual love. Just a melding of two men at a place in time. But Bolt believed he was too old to start a new life with him, was too afraid of/to change---to go back. He intimated as much a couple times. The bond between these 2 men was one of the reasons that Kennedy was so violently resentful of Lightfoot & Bolt. Ultimately, Kennedy took pleasure in destroying that love by destroying Lightfoot. He left Bolt alive so he'd suffer that loss boundlessly. No boodle would touch it, no white Cadillac would change it.

You hit on a key issue. Love and sex are two concepts that are confused in our society. There is romantic love that involves sex, but the vast majority of love is a completely separate issue. We love our parents, our children and grandchildren, and many other people with no erotic component. It is a desire for the good of the other and a joy in their company. A movie like this can not be understood if you don’t understand that type of platonic love.
