What was the purpose of them all going to the midnight movie at the drive-in after the robbery?

I think it was for the purpose of 'hiding in plain sight,' i.e. no law enforcement agency would expect to find them just hanging out at a drive-in, instead of fleeing at maximum speed. But for them, it obviously backfired.

In a way it's also a tribute to directors that put the audience into a movie Like Castle in The Tingler, The tingler was loose IN the movie theater.

This was a classic drive in movie, so those seeing it at a drive in might have a sense of "what if there are some folks like this here tonight?" !
