Frank Finlay's dual role

I'm surprised there's no mention on the imdb of Frank Finlay playing not only Porthos, but also appearing uncredited as the jeweler who must reproduce the stones missing from the Queen's necklace. Always wondered why he was chosen, perhaps a last-minute casting emergency, or simply an in-joke to see if anyone would notice.

I had no idea. A very interesting bit of trivia.

I point it out in my review. I suspect that Lester enjoyed Finlay's work and asked him to do it, though I've never read or heard an interview which confirms this. Finlay was (and is) primarily a character actor, so was best suited; though why him and not another actor, who knows?

I want to think it was an in-joke. Actually, when watching the movie with my sister I didn't notice at first that the stone-cutter was him; she did, though, and pointed it out to me.

When I saw the lowly character O'Reilly, I thought to myself, that looks like Frank Finlay. I think it was because, out of all of the cast he was primarily a character actor, and could alter his looks by playing a different character. BTW, at the end of the film, with the credits, he was billed as 'O'Reilly', thhat's how I knew it was him.
