Kind of sad to see that there are not many posts here re this incredible movie.
One of the most successful merging's of action and comedy ever done. Usually that is a kiss of death for me, but this movie pulls it off brilliantly somehow.
Acting and scenery superbly done.
And the fighting scenes seemed very realistic compared to most sword fighting movies.
It's a fantastic film. I agree with everything you say about it. Richard Lester brings a very whimsical and daring tone to the story. An excellent directing style mixed with excellent acting, locations and cinematography.
I always wanted to see Lester and the cast do the rest of Dumas' musketeer tales. Not possible now, but I can dream :)
I would have thought this film would have a higher rating than 7.5 although that is very good of course....I tend to believe a lot of people may not be familiar with it and perhaps the humor in it might be a bit tame (????) As above one of my all time favorites, includes a lot of detail, so add that to the list of its assets :)

The material fits Lester's sensibilities as a director like a glove. Very enjoyable movies.

Absolutely. I first saw it when I was 12, and I totally loved it. It has everything: action, comedy, drama... And when you are watching it you can see that the actors must have had a lot of fun making it!
shareI think it appeals to those who saw it on its original run the most. Many probably today that are young most likely are unaware of it, know the Charlie Sheen version instead. It brings warm memories of seeing it in the theater with my family. I even recall the theater erupting in a standing ovation at the credits.
shareI, too, first saw it in a theater. I remember during those great opening credits, my sister leaned over to me, and, in a voice of awe, "This is going to be a good movie."
And boy, was she right! That is one of my favorite movie going experiences, from the opening seconds, you just know that everything is going to jell and it will be great.
This remains in my Top 20 film list. The 4 Musketeers isn't too shabby either. Love the charm and business of this film. There is some interesting drama in the making of this film. Apparently both the actors and their agents were not aware that Lester was filming enough for the original and the sequel. There had to be some belated negotiations to ensure the actors would cooperate and complete the TWO projects.
