Not a lot of

chainsaw massacaring being done in a movie entitled "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" not even a lot of general chainsaw use in a film with that title either
(not complaining)

They didn't have that title in mind when they wrote it. It was going to be titled "HEADCHEESE".

Yea I heard bout that just recently worst film title/could-be film title I've ever heard of....

the worst film title is The Jerk. He wasn't a jerk at all. In fact, he was pretty polite.

The definition of jerk in that case refers more to someone who's an idiot, or does obviously stupid things. It suits the character perfectly.

Having just watched it, they should have called it "The Texas Sledgehammer Massacre." Though, that doesn't flow as nicely...

The title of the movie is like everything else about it, it uses psychology. The film became a household name because of its title alone. The title works in its favour, but on another level, it could be said to work against it. It works against it: for all those who are disappointed because there was no real 'chainsaw massacre' and come to the movie with the wrong attitude!, and for it: those who appreciate how clever it is/was. The film demands repeated viewings and I didn't appreciate just how important the title was until repeated viewings. If the film was released today, the title wouldn't have half the impact it had back then because so many horror films leave nothing to the imagination anyway.

THE
TEXAS- the film was shot and set in Texas.
CHAINSAW- Leather face terrifies everyone with his chainsaw.
MASSACRE- lots of dead bodies, pretty much the definition of a massacre.

So no, the title does not betray the film.

You didn't explain the reason for THE :(

"Well, obviously she wanted to have the party before the move!"

The scariest things about great horror films are the things that happen off-screen. The stuff you don't see is more frightening than having it constantly spelt out to you in the form of blood and gore.
