Why not run the money up on a motorcycle to begin with?
Never understood why they put it in a car to run it however many blocks it was to the station, when they could have put it on a motorcycle all along, as they did eventually.

shareThere is no reason why it could not have been done in the way you have suggested but the automobile wreck and the resulting time delay added to the film's tension and suspense.
shareI read the novel years ago and recall that they did indeed do just that in the book- use a motorcycle to transport the money. Also, all of the cross streets were blocked off well in advance so they didn't have to worry about pedestrians or vehicles getting in the way.
I imagine the change was made for the movie for comedic/dramatic purpose- the two cops speeding uptown in the cruiser (who probably have never been in a high speed pursuit before)- cop 1 "I've always wanted to do this- look at everyone, we're scaring the hell out of them!" cop 2 "Yeah, including me." And then of course the guy on the bicycle with the headphones oblivious to the whole situation casually pedals right in front of the path of the car causing the accident.
I too read the book. Suffice it to say, your memory is WAY better than mine. Just too long ago.
