Worst movie star shirt/tie combo in history?

Great movie, 70's movies are a little more real than todays movies. Look at the actors in this movie, not one pretty boy among the lot, the look like they all work at the transit authority! Authenticity was more important than the movie star good looks. The people in charge were actually old enough ( Hey not one among them was under 40!) I'm sure the remake will be full of attractive people who do not look the part.

But just one thing, that 70's ugly plad shirt and yellow tie combo that Matheau had has to be the WORST look a leading man ever had. But hey it was authenitc!

reply

Well the shirt and tie was bad because Matthau was an underpaid NY transit cop. Plus it made the character more true to life.

reply

LOL. The 70's weren't exactly the best decade for men's clothes: super wide ties, polyester everything, leisure suits...

reply

Just think of Ron Burgundy......

Hurm

reply

Hey,we thought that was a funny combo in 1974. But Walter Matthau could get away with anything.

those clothes. they got backbone

"Rue the day?" Who talks like that?

The main villain in Hard-Boild rocks an awful shirt/tie combo in the final shootout.

In the remake Denzel Washington wears the opposite outfit, a bright yellow shirt with a multicolor plad tie.

A pessimist is never disappointed and always surprised.

I bought that yellow tie on e-bay and sometimes
wear it with my polyester suit on a Saturday night out on the prowl.
Serious chick magnet.

I agree OP. Most of my fav movies come from 70's. I loved the realistic depictions, and the film ACTUALLY had WITTY DIALOGUE and an original plot! Dialogue and NEW CONCEPTS in A FILM-- and NOT ONE FUGGING CAR CHASE what a concept!

In the 70s, no one looked good. We just thought we did at the time.

Yandoblu and trhickey just kept me laughing for hours!

Walter's clothing in this movie were amazing. I should dress like him just to annoy people. Hmmm, I'd say that the '70s had superior fashion to the nasty '80s, and definitely to the horrible 'Emo' aesthetic that's currently popular with the kids. Yuck...

And back then people dressed and while I'm at it, had mannors too.

Oh sure, and today's tattoos, piercings, pink and blue hair and pants down around the thighs are real fashion statements. ;-)
