Mayor Koch

I just watched this movie again the other night and was struck by the fact that Lee Wallace, who plays the mayor, bears a striking resemblance to Ed Koch, who didn't become mayor of New York until three years after this movie was made. Did anyone else notice this?

reply

Every New Yorker noticed this. It's an interesting coincidence.

I thought that the remake should have cast someone who resembled Giuliani, but they didn't. Giuliani, however, is a major fan of James Gandolfini.

Somehow, I doubt it was a coincidence.

That makes absolutely no sense.

What's particularly striking about the coincidence is the mayor at the time was Abe Beame, who was a short, elderly guy, while Koch was a small time congressman from Greenwich Village. The filmmakers accidently hit paydirt.

That same actor, Lee Wallace, also played the Mayor in Batman (1989).

Lee & I lived in the same Apt building in NYC 301 W 45th St.
My wife & I were there from 1978 to 1982.

OTOH I had the impression Koch was quite popular, unlike the guy in the movie.

I'm not sure if the people who made the movie picked him for his resemblance, but Ed Koch was a well known politician in New York long before he became mayor. Maybe someone noticed the resemblance and thought it would be a cool inside joke...or maybe it's just one of those stranger than fiction coincidences.
