It has often been said that Matthau's expression said a thousand words..the final scene of Pelham is a great example....Coupled with the score-Garvers look said it all

I agree 1000% Besides his usual relaxed personna he exhibits a casual familiarity with the radio equipment that adds a layer of realism bordering on giving his scenes a documentary look.

The final freeze frame of his 'gotcha' face reminds me of cartoon dog!

Yeah, that last shot of Matthau's face is absolute gold. Great pile-driving score by David Shire, too.
