I remember when my mother said we were going to go see this (I was 11 in 1974) and I said "I don't want to go. It sounds boring. I hate westerns". So I hesitated and complained for a while and finally agreed to go and we got there right when John Gielgud said something like "he got his accent in a place called Chicago". Anyway I ended up loving the movie. I saw it again later (TV maybe) from the beginning and I thought "wow, I didn't know about this whole kidnapping thing". That opening is truly haunting and very good.

The opening is indeed well executed and what follows actually disappoints; it's slow moving with too much exposition and too many stars getting their turn to shine.

I described it as a mediocre sandwich in terrific bread.
