I'm sure the first time I saw this film (in 1975), all the scenes with the historian and the police, except for the final scene, were missing, so the ending didn't make as much sense ... not that it does anyway.
Did anyone else notice this ?

I've never seen that edit and since you didn't say what country that you seen this in was... I guess not.
